Class Abilities:
Arcane Attunement: You can use the spell-like powers dancing lights, detect magic, flare, ghost sound, and read magic a combined total of times per day equal to 3 + your Int modifier. These spell-like powers do not count against your total of spells known or spells per day.
Armored Mage: Normally, armor of any type interferes with an arcane spellcaster’s gestures, which can cause spells to fail if those spells have a somatic component. A duskblade’s limited focus and specialized training, however, allows you to avoid arcane spell failure so long as you stick to light armor and light shields. This training does not extend to medium or heavy armors, nor to heavy shields.
Racial Abilities:
Avariel Abilities and Racial Features
* +2 Dexterity, –2 Constitution. Avariel have hollow bones and, as a result, are more fragile than humans. At the same time, they are gifted with an almost otherworldly grace.
* Medium: Avariel are Medium creatures and have no bonuses or penalties due to their size.
* Normal Speed: Avariel have a base speed of 30 feet.
* Low-Light Vision: Avariel can see twice as far as humans in conditions of dim light.
* Elven Immunities: Avariel are immune to magic sleep effects and get a +2 racial saving throw bonus against enchantment spells and effects.
* Keen Sight (Ex): Avariel gain a +4 racial bonus on all Spot checks.
* Wing-Aided Movement: Avariel can use their wings to help with movement even if they can’t fly yet. The extra lift from her wings gives an avariel a +10 racial bonus on Jump checks.
* Proficient with either rapier or longsword; proficient with lasso and bolas.
* Gliding (Ex): An avariel can use her wings to glide, negating damage from a fall of any height and allowing 20 feet of forward travel for every 5 feet of descent. Avariel glide at a speed of 40 feet (average maneuverability). Even if an avariel’s maneuverability improves, she can’t hover while gliding. An avariel can’t glide while carrying a heavy load.
If an avariel becomes unconscious or helpless while in midair, her wings naturally unfurl and powerful ligaments stiffen the wings. The avariel descends in a tight
corkscrew and takes only 1d6 points of falling damage, no matter what the actual distance of the fall.
* Flight (Ex): When an avariel reaches 5 Hit Dice, she becomes able to fly at a speed of 40 feet (average maneuverability). An avariel can’t fly while carrying a heavy load, wearing heavy armor, or while fatigued or exhausted. Avariel can safely fly for a number of rounds equal to their Constitution modifier (minimum 1 round). They can exert themselves to fly for up to twice as long, but then they’re fatigued at the end of the flight. Avariel are likewise fatigued after spending a total of more than 10 minutes per day flying. Because avariel can glide before, after, and between rounds of actual flight, they can remain aloft for extended periods (even if they can only use flight for 1 round at a time without becoming fatigued).
When they reach 10 Hit Dice, avariel have enough stamina and prowess to fly for longer periods. They can fly at a speed of 40 feet (average maneuverability), and flying requires no more exertion than walking or running.
An avariel with flight can make a dive attack. A dive attack works like a charge, but the avariel must move a minimum of 30 feet and descend at least 10 feet. An avariel can make a dive attack only when wielding a piercing weapon; if the attack hits, it deals double damage.
An avariel with flight can use the run action while flying, provided she flies in a straight line.

Character History:
A: Appearance
1) Describe yourself as someone meeting you for the first time would see you. (Race?, Gender?, Age?, Size? Coloration? Attractiveness?, Dress? Do you try to emphasize or hide any of these features?)
Alexian Volsung is a young adult male Avariel with a 20 foot wingspan, standing 6’1, 8’with the top of furled wings. He possesses an albino, sculpted physique with skin etched via metallic arcane runes as a spell-book in-the-flesh. Several thin gray scars in close calls in duels through adolescence. As a disinherited prince, valuing a dualistic culture of martial and magical prowess, he tends to dress in functional finery, a fashionable, well-tailored retinue of clothing which doesn’t get in the way in a fight and is specially slit to accommodate his vast white wings. When not wanting attention for them, he will don a gentleman’s cloak to just widen the look over his shoulders rather than reveal the wings.
2) What other details would someone notice on a closer look? (Distinguishing marks, birthmarks, scars, etc?)
Alexian has pointed ears, white angel wings, gray scars, runes in his white flesh, and a vambrace and gauntlet which makes up his lower left arm.
3) Do you have a distinctive way of speaking or any other mannerisms or memorable behavior?
He tends to speak with a smooth, chilling articulation. Formal in grammar, generally it lacks indication of his mood.
B: Birth and Family
1) Where and when were you born? (Also good to include: Do you know your exact birthdate? Did anything unusual (storms, accidents, deaths, etc?) happen about the same time, with which some people might still associate your birthdate?)
Alexian was born in a Rimevast bordering small avariel mountaintop kingdom known as Volsung. He was born just over a century ago.
2) Who are your parents? (Names, Occupations, Social class, Were they married?, Are they still alive? are all good things to include)
His ancestry dates back 1 generation to the royal line, when a great hero Kiral (his father) descended from the heavens and formed this small fiefdom after centuries of crusades of which volumes of lore can be found(see Alexian fiction on offsite forum). He was the youngest of 6 sons, and his aging father was murdered prematurely, forcing his lengthy and current exile to Avalon.
3) Do you have any siblings? (If so, it would be good to describe them as you did your parents above.)
Nememiah, Uriel, Barachiel, Israfel, Raphael, and Elsebet were the children. It was believed that the unusual number of fit sons helped to solidify king Kiral’s rule for several centuries.
4) Do you know any members of your extended family? (grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins?
Also would be good to describe them as above) Birth rates among his race are quite low, and the dangers of the Rimevast, as well as the Rite of Passage into adulthood, keeps the population down to a best of the best minimum.
5) How did you get along with your family?
Alexian’s youth and compassion never entirely fit well, but since he was so far removed from rule as to be little more than a celebrity, it never mattered. Until that is, his eldest brother committed patricide and chased off the one brother who did not cater to his action.
C: Education and Work
1-4
Given the pseudo Norse ancestry of the Volsung Avariel House that I am basing Alexian upon, there is indeed a focus upon warrior virtue. Given that they are elves with centuries to perfect themselves, expectations are quite high. Many tutors come and go across a range of topics throughout the century-long upbringing.
The height of this Volsunga upbringing is in the Hroptr Saga.
Much like the Spartan Agoge, in the Avariel Hroptr Saga, boys are sent into a ritual period of formal training that includes military philosophy, pugilism, battles against Rimevast tribes and beasts, extensive physical fitness and pain tolerance regimens. These harsh and often fatal tests of manhood were soothed by the embedded narcissistic ideology that these hardships are going to forge the victorious youth into the true masters of Therafim. Alternatively, when recovering from grievous wounds and dizzying exhaustion, they were schooled in battle magic. The fluid integration of flesh and spirit conducted through the mind was the Querin Hinuel, roughly translating to Warrior Philosopher.
Following the Hroptr Saga, there is the Vaejir Saga. In this century, youth must in the tradition of their king Kiral spend a century of their lives wandering the worlds, wielding the skills and lessons of their upbringing. There is no obligation to return, but the privilege is denied to any male who has not ventured away for a century.
5) Given the focus on magical and philosophical integration into a warrior culture, the Avariel of the Volsung House are an exception to the world’s rule. With thousands of years of recorded ancestry, each generation lasting centuries, the strength and value of the written word is of great importance. So much so, that…
6) Alexian has found himself working as a Historian student at the Avalon City University. It occupies much of his time, but he uses the opportunity to uncover lessons and lore that might help him in his eventual return from the Vaejir Saga.
D: Friends
1-5
As a child, while others were seen as competition, natural tendencies toward a desire for friendship meant that sometimes that barrier would fall. His brother Raphael while still older, did not excel the way that he had, which made it easier to befriend him than his even older brethren who saw Alexian as a potential threat to their future hegemony.
Through the years, he would befriend fellow Saga heroic youth, many of whom were to perish through the trial, and some who would flat out desert. In one instance of his training, a ‘friend’ utilized the trust to win a challenge through treachery, which hardened him to camaraderie for years to come.
Despite his natural compassion, Alexian has difficulty making friends with others of an ‘Alpha’ mentality. He is still born and bred to be a competitor, and it is difficult to relax around other men capable of upstaging him. So in his friends, he prefers those whose strengths differ from his own, and who will not prod him to try and turn day to day life into a comparison.
As romance has went so far, physical pleasures have always been available to the Volsung males, either through taken slaves or the daughters of lower-classed avariels whom had failed their Hroptr. In much the same archaic martial spirit however, sexual prowess is a mark of a heroic man and a worthy lady. Intimacy was socially discouraged as a distraction from the Collectivist ideals of the Volsung upbringing, and the prospect of marriage usually reserved for only those great men who return from their Vaejir.
Alexian was never terribly socially adept, and he had only been on the road a year or so from his exile of a treacherous elder brother, in an early-taken Vaejir. As of now, satisfactions of the flesh find his alluring form easily enough, though in this mercantile, liberty-induced culture, emotional attachment to a like-minded lover is still forthcoming.
E: Attitudes and Beliefs
1-8) The Volsung hold themselves to be the children of Solars. They are the blessed among those who walk and fly the world, and to them, prayer is performed through action. A valiant life of learning and conquering best honors one’s ancestors, who also happen to be creatures closest to the honored among the gods. This divine lineage as they describe it at once demands their extreme standards of upbringing for all Volsung youth, as well as enables their entitlement to royal privilege and lordly might.
Deities of asceticism and piety, as well as monastic traditions are seen poorly, as ways of retreating from, rather than mastering the vices of life. The Volsung way is one of reflective action. There must be a contemplation when active, an action when contemplative. All of reality is seen as the collective garden where creatures refine or pollute their spirits, and their reward is found in their next life among the planes to inevitably dissolve into nothingness or ascend into divinity.
As morality goes, with all of those other races that are seen as inferior, (all but a few, sadly), one must take a code of restraint and compassion, the details of this are left to the individual. Among fellow Avariel men, physical and intellectual conflict is encouraged as a means of culling all but the absolute greatest among them, and as a means of limiting the influence they can exert upon the world, as they realize their way is a narrow one. Women are treated with chivalry, and gross conduct is seen as barbaric and unevolved. Even in being absolutely heartless, one must attain elegance in doing so.
It is this accepted cruelty where Alexian is troubled. While fully willing to commit righteous violence and engage in competition for dominance, he is not willing to act with brutality and cruel disregard for others in order to get his way. And while one showing the greatest potential at his age, his lack of subterfuge has come to cost him his position at court.
In the current age, Alexian’s main concern is the acquisition of wealth, experience, knowledge, and power. He sees his century as a race against time to ascend the formidable power of his corrupt brothers, and go valiantly to face them down when his century comes to turn. It is also his hope to soften some of the more cruel aspects of his society, and take measures to lessen their isolationism.
He takes his obligations seriously, but knows not to let them overburden his personal life or long-term crusade. In the end, Avalon is a stop-off point in his road to self-perfection.
F: Edges and Flaws
1-3) Alexian was certainly a prodigy among his people. Beautiful, strong, naturally gifted of magic, he was everything an Avariel should have embodied, except for one fatal flaw in his culture…Kindness. His aggressive instincts at youth faltered despite his natural talent when it came to doing harm. At some point, his kindness carried one of his friends Kyras, who then repaid him by cutting off his arm at the elbow to throw to an ice troll as he struggled his way up a cliff side. Through pulling some strings with a Dwarven colony in a neighboring mountain, his arm was replaced with a finely crafted golem-part. (Absolutely no statistical benefit, just a cool description of a dastana and gauntlet).
Among his other flaws are social ineptitude, a strict adherence to personal honor even to his disadvantage, and an obsessive drive to achieve greater things at the cost of prudence or better sense.
His enemies are his siblings, as well as those who try to challenge him in any serious fashion. He grew up in a culture where being upstaged meant losing everything, so many acts of foolish bravado aimed at his direction have greater urgency to be crushed than the challenger may realize.
G: Likes and Dislikes
1-3) As short term goals go, he paces himself with studying history, magic, the cosmos, and battle. He takes deep pleasure in learning, athleticism, and promiscuity among the cosmopolitan array of Avalon’s lady citizenry.
He despises duplicity and deception except in battle, usually minimizing contact with those he sees as honor-less scum. Additionally, whenever he is involved in a team, while heavily competitive to be seen as the best, he has no desire to be seen as the leader or voice. He takes extreme resentment to those who work to manipulate the team and sacrifice the overall good for themselves.
By far, failure is his greatest fear. His worst nightmare is that he will lose when he confronts his currently far older, more powerful brethren.
1-5
The first truly monstrous race he encountered was an ice-troll that his youth squad was collectively hunting. When their plans went awry, they found themselves on the run. It seemed as if the beast was indomitable. When his own best friend severed his arm to sate the creature, he had to cauterize the wound himself. That ice-troll represents the sheet tide of chaotic power that structured training may not ever guarantee superiority over.
His first functional use with magic was distracting a bird through manipulating its chirps when a young child.
His only unusual possession is a dastana and gauntlet set which is flavored to be the substance of his arm after a vicious betrayal. It never has quite the same function or mobility as his natural hand, and is a constant source of psychological wound for him to view it. The proverbial iron hand, the sign of treachery hardening his heart is ever attached as a necessary evil.
Aside from what was already stated, in a nutshell: Alexian grew up as a young prodigy, fueled a great deal of jealousy, and was held back from survival by a rigid sense of compassion and honor that came back to bite him in his backside several times. He endured brutal crucibles to become the pinnacle of a man that he is today, and only intends to ascend further and further until he can liberate his homeland.
