Character History:
Baeler Caelvial was born in the remote northern reaches of the Rimevast. Like many so-called 'Ice Elves', his family had something of a nomadic existence, roaming from sacred ancient site to elder fortress, on a never-ending circuit. He grew up on the road, and took up the bow like his father and brothers before him. Life was harsh there, but for over a century, he could say that he had a home, even if it moved periodically. A devestating attack by assorted northern denizens, seeking to raid one of the temples and loot it of all wealth and magical artifacts, ended the lives of many of his people, almost shattering them. They won the day, but their losses were too heavy.
They simply couldn't survive as they were…they would have to seek out another nomadic gathering like their own, and join with them, and inform them of the lapse in the guardianship of those sites. Some, though, were disheartened, and simply left..vanishing into the wilderness. Baeler, however, was far from disheartened. He was..angry. He'd devoted his life, as his family had before him, to guarding these sites…but the power locked within should have been used, in his mind. One artifact alone might have saved countless of his people. He did not skulk into the shadows that day, but he -did- inform the elders that he planned on leaving, rather than join them in the trek to another nomadic party. He would go south, into other lands, and seek knowledge and skill, that he might better serve his people. At least, that was what he told them. He had other reasons for going as well..he wanted to experience something -other- than cold wastelands and marauding monsters. A few of the finer things in life..and so, in time, he came to Avalon City.
A: Appearance
1) Describe yourself as someone meeting you for the first time would see you. (Race?, Gender?, Age?, Size? Coloration? Attractiveness?, Dress? Do you try to emphasize or hide any of these features?)
1A: Ice Elves are a little more unusual than the more 'local' varieties, in Avalon. But in short, they'd see a pale, white-haired elf, fairly handsome, but stiff and stoic. His expression doesn't quite match with his fair appearance, far too guarded. He's usually dressed in leathers and traveler's garb.
2) What other details would someone notice on a closer look? (Distinguishing marks, birthmarks, scars, etc?)
2A: A scar or two perhaps, earned some time ago in battles of his youth, perhaps fighting a northern threat of some sort, an orc, or goblin.
3) Do you have a distinctive way of speaking or any other mannerisms or memorable behavior?
3A: He tries not to speak much when in mixed company, it's not his role to lead. He tends to be concise, as if certain that if he talks too long, he'll draw unwanted attention.
B: Birth and Family
1) Where and when were you born? (Also good to include: Do you know your exact birthdate? Did anything unusual (storms, accidents, deaths, etc?) happen about the same time, with which some people might still associate your birthdate?)
1A: In the Rimevast expanse, during the later months of the year, December 21st. Memorable only because of its proximity to a winter festival held by his people.
2) Who are your parents? (Names, Occupations, Social class, Were they married?, Are they still alive? are all good things to include)
2A: Two Ice-elf warriors, skilled indeed, enough to see them through the battle at any rate. They were married, and protected the caravan as best they could, for many years. Presumably they'll have been well received wherever they went.
3) Do you have any siblings? (If so, it would be good to describe them as you did your parents above.)
3A: None.
4) Do you know any members of your extended family? (grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins? Also would be good to describe them as above)
4A: A few, though there were few elders of his family alive to his memory, and he knows none survived the battle.
5) How did you get along with your family?
5A: Very well, as he was a dutiful and reliable member of the community, even if he was a bit less boisterous than they were.
C: Education and Work
1) Did you serve an apprenticeship in order to learn your current profession/class? For how long?
1A: Yes, he did, with the scouts of his clan. It took -many- years to gain what skill he has now.
2) If you were not an apprentice, how did you learn your trade/skills/ect? Formal schooling? Informal Teachers? Self-Taught?
2A: N/A
3) Who was your master or teacher? (Race? Gender? Appearance? Personality?) Is he/she still alive? How were you treated? Are/Were you on good terms with your master?
3A: Not one simple teacher, but a collection of scouts and masters of stealth among the clan who took on various apprentices. Most of his teachers were pleased with his efforts. He was not silver-tongued as some might be, but he was efficient.
4) Did your teacher have any other apprentices or students? Who were they? Did you get along?
4A: Of course, several other clanmates his age and older were learning the same arts. He got along as well as can be expected, there was friendly rivalry, of course.
5) Due to the rarity of literacy in this setting, how important are books, writings, letters, ect. to your character? Regardless as to whether or not he/she can read?
5A: Very important. They allow him to gain knowledge of experiences of others, which helps him become more survivable overall.
6) Do you have a job other than "adventurer"? Who do you work for? How much of your time does this require?
6A: Thief, dungeoneer. He works for himself, or for those who pay well.
D: Friends
1) Who were your friends as a child? As an adolescent? As an adult?
1A: At all stages, he had friends among the clan, perhaps more among the stealthier variety, the scouts, the dungeoneers who learned to disable the temple defenses over the years, to allow them safe passage.
2) How many of these people are still alive? How many are you still friends with?
2A: Few, as most of the tribe was slain. Some might be somewhat stiff towards him after he left the clan for Avalon, but others understood his reasoning and wished him well.
3) Who is/was your best friend? What is the most memorable thing that the two of you ever did together?
3A: He does not play favorites. His clanmates were all equally important to him.
4) What do you look for in a friend?
4A: Usefulness, and reliability, primarily.
5) Have you ever been in love? Was it reciprocated? Do you have (or have you had) a boy-/girlfriend, a lover, or a spouse? More than one? Are you looking for one? What do you look for in a romantic partner?
5A: Not particularly. He was not prone to 'boyhood crushes', and has not taken any long-term partners in recent years, among his clan. Since travelling to Avalon, he's not been with any one person for long, more of a succession of one-night stands with barmaids who find his appearance tantalizing.
E: Attitudes and Beliefs
1) What are your beliefs about religion and the afterlife? Do you follow any particular god or gods? What appeals to you most about this religion? Least?
1A: He avoids thinking about it most of the time, but if called to his attention, he believes he will receive a just reward for aiding his people, if successful.
2) Where do spirits of nature, the elements and the dead fit into these beliefs?
2A: Ice spirits have a small place in his heart, but only because they're a part of his homeland. The dead…belong with the dead. Simple as that.
3) What gods, religions, or priesthoods will you have nothing to do with?
3A: Most of them. They serve little purpose for him.
4) What is your moral code? Under what conditions will you kill? Steal? Lie? Do you have a personal code of behavior about violence? Magic? Sex? Dealing with Evil Beings?
4A: His morals are not as black-and-white as those of his kin. To him, killing, stealing, or lying are all justifiable under different circumstances. He won't behave as a barbarian, but he will kill to defend himself if necessary. If not, he'd rather run and evade pursuit, truth be told.
5) How committed are you to seeing through something (a task, quest, bargain, etc) that you have started?
5A: Very much so, but if he finds out he was cheated in the task, he will not hesitate to drop it and turn aside.
6) How important are the following to you?: Power, Wealth, Fame, Honor, Family, Friends, Love, Knowledge, Religion, Your job? To what lengths would you go to acquire or preserve these things?
6A: Power: Important as it allows him to pursue his ultimate goal. Wealth: Same as Power. Fame: Only so far as gathering support to aid his people in the end. Honor: Useful in some ways, but a hindrance in others. Family: Very important, of course, he respects his elders, even though he disagrees with them. Friends? If he gathers them, good. They'll help him in return for him aiding them, as it should be. Love: He's not really a romantic. If romance befalls him, he'll deal with it. Until then, he sates his needs with those that he finds appealing, if they're willing. Beyond that, it's irrelevant to him. Knowledge is vital in learning how to better use the artifacts his people guard. Religion has little use to him…while he can respect it as a tool, it's not one he can wield. His 'job', as a thief or rogue? He does it well, that's the extent of its importance.
7) How often do you remember your dreams? How much attention do you pay to them? Do they inspire you? Guide you? Inspire You? Warn you? Frighten You?
7A: No more or less than any other individual.
8) What is your attitude towards magic? People who use it? Fearsome monsters? The unknown in general?
8A: A valuable tool, used by those with the gift for it. Monsters are monsters. Slay them if they endanger you, or avoid them if you can and there's no profit in killing them. The Unknown: Well, if he doesn't know it, it probably hasn't affected him yet.
F: Edges and Flaws
1) What are you especially good at? What sets you apart from the rest of the world? A skill? An unusual knack? A certain flair of style or wit?
1A: Everything related to thievery, or the disarmament of traps…aside from being an invaluable roguish skill, it's something that his people need, when they are to open the vaults they guard.
2) What flaws do you have? Bad habits? Obsessions? Terrible (or embarrassing) secrets?
2A: Some have described him as being overly cautious. He only engages in a stand-up fight if he must, or if he believes the odds are in his favor. This makes him seem cowardly, to some.
3) Do you have any enemies? How much trouble do those conflicts cause you?
3A: Unlikely, none of his tribe would hold his actions against him to that extent.
G: Likes and Dislikes
1) What do you love? (People? Places? Creatures? Kinds of Food? Activities? Subjects?)
1A: Wealth, power, influence, self-advancement.
2) What do you hate? How do you typically react to these hated things?
2A: Ignorance, and those who won't use the tools available to them out of some 'higher calling', such as his people's refusal to use the artifacts of the places they guard.
3) What do you fear? What is your worst nightmare?
3A: To die before he can gain enough strength to return in triumph to his people.
H: Miscellaneous
1) Describe your first encounter with a nonhuman monster. (Not counting player races, animals, etc that you grew up with, but feel free to mention them too)
1A: A northern variety of goblin, which attacked the nomads during a trek from one hold to another. They were dispatched relatively easily, with few injuries on their side, but the ferocity of the beasts surprised him even though he'd been told of their ways.
2) If you are a spellcaster, describe your first experience with using magic. What were the circumstances? Were you expecting it?
2A: N/A.
3) If you have an animal companion or familiar, describe how you acquired it. Describe this ally's personality, and its attitude towards you. (Loyal unto death, mischievous, lazy, etc)
3A: N/A.
4) If you have any unusual possessions, describe how you acquired them. Is their value practical, monetary, sentimental or some combination of these?
4A: Nothing that could really be described as out of the ordinary.
5) Please describe your characters general background, this may be any length you wish, but at least one paragraph. You may use any or all of the information above, or new information not covered. (Encouraged)
5A: See Background.
