Questionnaire
A: Appearance
1) Describe yourself as someone meeting you for the first time would see you. (Race?, Gender?, Age?, Size? Coloration? Attractiveness?, Dress? Do you try to emphasize or hide any of these features?) Belle Hibiki is a young-looking woman - perhaps not out of her teens. She has short, bright red hair, the strands sometimes appearing pink in the right light (no doubt altered or dyed). Her face is petitely featured, and her eyes are a soft pale blue. She has smooth, sunkissed skin over her lean frame, her muscles toned and powerful without being grossly disproportionate in size. Belle prefers loose clothing that doesn't restrict her movement, and will often bind her breasts (which are quite large) down while training or adventuring. She will, though, sometimes dress more casually, and when she does she often wears provactive dresses that err on the side of nice, but can be a bit naughty.
2) What other details would someone notice on a closer look? (Distinguishing marks, birthmarks, scars, etc?) Belle doesn't have much in the way of scarring thanks to magical healing. When Belle is 'combat ready,' however, one can FEEL the psionic power coming off of her, thrumming like a huge electrical current through a power line.
3) Do you have a distinctive way of speaking or any other mannerisms or memorable behavior? Belle has a rough accent and a direct, unvarnished way of speaking. If she thinks you're an idiot, she'll tell you – even if you're a king or queen.
In the past, Belle was known for being extremely nervous around men and the topic of sex. Over the years this mellowed; after being the student of a Tantrist and 'friends with benefits' with other individuals, her attitude has swung in the opposite direction. Belle spends a lot of time on Sam Dray's farm with its many beastmen, women, and free sexuality.
B: Birth and Family
1) Where and when were you born? Belle was born roughly eighteen years ago in a Tash'noran monastery far to the north of Therafim.
2) Who are your parents? Belle's mother was a woman fleeing from a raided village that had been pillaged by monsters. Belle has no idea who her biological father is – her mother died during childbirth, and never told Belle's adoptive father, Thafer, anything about him (or so he claimed).
3) Do you have any siblings? Unknown, but likely not.
4) Do you know any members of your extended family? Nope.
5) How did you get along with your family? N/A
C: Education and Work
1) Did you serve an apprenticeship in order to learn your current profession/class? For how long? From the moment she could kick and punch, Belle was enrolled in the Tash'noran combat school, where she remained until the monastery was destroyed when she was 14 years old.
2) If you were not an apprentice, how did you learn your trade/skills/ect? Formal schooling? Informal Teachers? Self-Taught? N/A
3) Who was your master or teacher? (Race? Gender? Appearance? Personality?) Is he/she still alive? How were you treated? Are/Were you on good terms with your master? Belle had many masters at the school, ranging from the old and wise to the crotchety and mean. They came from many races, though the majority were human. Belle was treated the same as the other students – much was expected of her, there was little sympathy for failure, but the masters were not needlessly cruel.
4) Did your teacher have any other apprentices or students? Who were they? Did you get along? Belle was a member of a body of around twenty students at the monastery. They were mostly boys, though there were a few girls. Friendships were formed, and sometimes even romances, but Tash'noran training – which by its nature is extremely competitive - came first.
5) Due to the rarity of literacy in this setting, how important are books, writings, letters, ect. to your character? Regardless as to whether or not he/she can read? Belle understands the importance of books and scrolls generally as preservers of knowledge, but doesn't do much herself. She can see a day, however, when she will want to put her knowledge and experiences to paper, so any students she has will be able to duplicate her “awesome techniques” … minus the sexual misadventures.
6) Do you have a job other than "adventurer"? Nope. It pays the bills.
D: Friends
1) Who were your friends as a child? As an adolescent? As an adult? As a young woman in the Tash'noran monastery, Belle seldom made friends. Those she did were primarily rivals that she was occasionally forced to join with to conquer the challenges. During her life there, she had one true friend, Stella, and even then their relationship was arguably more romantic than friendly.
As an adult, Belle has made many friends during her adventures, and had more than a few misadventures in love. The former group primarily consists of her comrades in arms.
2) How many of these people are still alive? How many are you still friends with? From her youth, not many, if any. The monastery's destruction meant the wiping out of many of those Belle knew.
Most of Belle's current day friends are still alive and around, though they have drifted apart over the months as they've found other things to occupy their time.
3) Who is/was your best friend? What is the most memorable thing that the two of you ever did together? Stella and Belle, climbing up to the top of the highest mountain in the circle in which the monastery was nestled, braving and overcoming dangers the instructors were convinced they weren't ready for, then sitting together to watch the sun rise as they shared wafers.
4) What do you look for in a friend? Honesty. A good heart. Everything else is secondary.
5) Have you ever been in love? Was it reciprocated? Do you have (or have you had) a boy-/girlfriend, a lover, or a spouse? More than one? Are you looking for one? What do you look for in a romantic partner? Belle might have been in love with her sensei in Therafim, Grimm, at one point, and it's possible that Grimm loved her back. It's also possible that Belle loves Aireiel, but she isn't sure whether it's actual love, or just deep affection and caring friendship.
Originally deathly afraid of sexuality, Belle has grown to be far more open. It is unheard of her to open her bed to a friend in need of comfort and attention. With this freedom, however, comes a hesitancy to commit to a single individual; to Belle, theres such joy in the act that constraining oneself to a single partner seems, well, selfish. This attitude has earned her a certain reputation in the circles she travels, but those that underestimate her often end up on the ground missing a few teeth.
E: Attitudes and Beliefs
1) What are your beliefs about religion and the afterlife? Do you follow any particular god or gods? What appeals to you most about this religion? Least? Belle has a nebulous relationship with the Gods. On the one hand, she recognizes that they exist (how can they not? Clerics get their power from somewhere), and that they're necessary, but on the other, she finds the idea of cosmic guiding powers annoying. It doesn't help that she's stated that one of her goals in life is to get strong enough to go to the afterlife and kick a God in the balls.
2) Where do spirits of nature, the elements and the dead fit into these beliefs? Nature and the elements get a pass from her adversarial spirituality because they are a part of the world, rather than outside of it. The dead? Should stay in the ground where they belong; undead are a 'wrongness' no matter who is using them.
3) What gods, religions, or priesthoods will you have nothing to do with? Belle tries to not let people that worship Gods she finds stupid/evil bother her until those people actually start doing bad things to unwilling, innocent victims (people outside their clergy). Falazure, Garyx, Tiamat and others like them tend to draw her ire.
4) What is your moral code? Under what conditions will you kill? Steal? Lie? Do you have a personal code of behavior about violence? Magic? Sex? Dealing with Evil Beings? Code: Don't hurt the innocent. Always oppose oppression. Freedom is to be cherished; slavery is to be hated. The way to strength is passing through fire, not avoiding it. Competition is a joyful activity. One-on-one duels are sacred and MUST be respected.
Belle will kill bad guys if she must, but it really has to come down to a matter of life and death for things to go that far. Likewise for stealing: if there is no other way to get the object needed and it's IMPERATIVE to acquire it. Same for lying, though Belle personally is an awful liar, so she often doesn't try.
5) How committed are you to seeing through something (a task, quest, bargain, etc) that you have started? Belle has a great deal of pride; enough for her to risk her life on comparatively frivolous things. When it comes to missions, she is LOATHE to retreat, and even if she's forced to by circumstance she will beat herself up for a very long time.
6) How important are the following to you?: Power, Wealth, Fame, Honor, Family, Friends, Love, Knowledge, Religion, Your job? To what lengths would you go to acquire or preserve these things? Power – Physical, extremely important, political not so much. Fame – irrelevant. Honor – Absolute. Family, Friends, Love – Powerful motivators to fight, giving meaning to it. Knowledge/Religion – Something for other people to worry over, she's got bad guys to beat up. As to how far she would go, see #5.
7) How often do you remember your dreams? How much attention do you pay to them? Do they inspire you? Guide you? Inspire You? Warn you? Frighten You? Belle isn't a precog. Her dreams often involve the usual silliness that most mortals dream of, and is often provoked into nightmares by eating too much spicy food.
8) What is your attitude towards magic? People who use it? Fearsome monsters? The unknown in general? Magic is nice and has allowed her to kick some seriously harder ass than usual at times before. She doesn't like the idea of completely relying on it, however – someone should be strong enough to carry their own weight without magical props everywhere. As to the unknown, Belle faces it brashly, confident in her own ability to handle whatever gets thrown at her.
F: Edges and Flaws
1) What are you especially good at? What sets you apart from the rest of the world? A skill? An unusual knack? A certain flair of style or wit? Belle is a martial artist of near-legendary strength. Her particular power – like those of most Tash'nora – come from a melding of martial arts and psionics. Masters of the style walk the Earth like demigods, capable of tearing apart dragons with their bare hands, or reducing entire streets to rubble with blasts of psionic power.
2) What flaws do you have? Bad habits? Obsessions? Terrible (or embarrassing) secrets? Belle can be rude, obnoxious, and aggravating at times. Her devotion to getting stronger eats more time in her 'training days' than most commoners have for work. This obsession has sometimes gone too far, and when Belle is depressed her increased activity can cause her to injure herself.
3) Do you have any enemies? How much trouble do those conflicts cause you? Tash'nora are enemies of illithids, and vice versa. Other than that, Belle has not made many PERSONAL enemies of anybody; anyone she might have ticked off is either enjoying the lower planes or has decided to leave her alone.
G: Likes and Dislikes
1) What do you love? (People? Places? Creatures? Kinds of Food? Activities? Subjects?) Belle loves her work. Specifically, she loves fighting and conflict, though death and serious injury aren't. Friendly competition is a great way to spend some spare time, to set measuring sticks for oneself and to see how far you've come, and how much farther you have to go.
Also, uhm. Indelicate, but sex. Belle likes sex. Lots of it. Raised differently, she might have become a nymphomaniac Bast high priestess by now. Thankfully (regretfully to some), she's chosen to follow the path of the 'hero' first and foremost.
2) What do you hate? How do you typically react to these hated things? A lot of WHO Belle hates can be found above. WHAT she hates are many and varied, and often change depending on what day it is. She has a … tempestuous temper, to say the least, and can be very loud and vocal about it. Those things she TRULY hates are few and far between, and she will either flat out ignore them (in the case of jerkasses), or swiftly dispose of them (in the case of villains).
3) What do you fear? What is your worst nightmare? To die alone and forgotten, without having made an impact to anyone. To wither away to the point where infirmity keeps her from fighting.
H: Miscellaneous
1) Describe your first encounter with a nonhuman monster. (Not counting player races, animals, etc that you grew up with, but feel free to mention them too) Belle's first encounter with a monster was a bugbear back when she was eight years old. It was an adolescent that had gotten separated from its parent and was hungry. Belle was forced to confront it when it came for her and the other students when they were out camping in the woods. No one really expected her to win, least of all herself, but she attacked and endured anyway, and managed to scrape out a victory. Whenever she gets into what seems like an unwinnable situation, she thinks back to that moment to remind herself that the impossible isn't so hard to do, after all.
2) If you are a spellcaster, describe your first experience with using magic. What were the circumstances? Were you expecting it?
3) If you have an animal companion or familiar, describe how you acquired it. Describe this ally's personality, and its attitude towards you. (Loyal unto death, mischievous, lazy, etc)
4) If you have any unusual possessions, describe how you acquired them. Is their value practical, monetary, sentimental or some combination of these?
5) Please describe your characters general background, this may be any length you wish, but at least one paragraph. You may use any or all of the information above, or new information not covered. (Encouraged)
Belle was always different from the other children. Even from a very young age, it was clear that her path lay amongst those less traveled. Although she was unremarkable in intelligence and got along with other children only fractionally better than he did with animals, she showed a remarkable aptitude for the martial arts - one beyond that of the other gifted youngsters she surrounded herself with.
Belle was born in a remote monastery deep within the snowy mountains to the northwest of Avalon. The cloister was devoted, as many monasteries were, to the objective of self-realization and control, although Tash'nora - as it was called - approached that lofty goal differently than others. Rather than reach enlightenment through meditation and spiritual examination, Tash'nora emphasized a physical and mental perfection in all things - specifically in combat. The masters believed that only through the fires of conflict could the human body be forged into the perfect weapon, and it was in this vein that their students were trained. Their limits were constantly tested, and for many, pushed beyond.
Those who survived and completed their training would become Slayers - men and women whom served the Tash'nora's in the world at large. The Tash'nora enjoyed a brief period of fame several years before Belle's birth when a group of five Slayers foiled an intricate illithid plot to take over the minds of the leadership of Avalon.
Belle's mother was a refugee from a small township just beyond the mountains that had been raided by orcs. Pregnant at the time, Belle's mother - Tara Hibiki - fled with others to the protection of the Tash'nora, who took them in. Although many of the others from her village soon moved on, Tara stayed at the monastery to give birth.
Despite the efforts of the psions and monks present, Tara gave her life in bringing Belle into the world. With the father unknown, and not having any idea of Tara's extended family, the monastery took the girl into their care. Thafer, a Slayer who had befriended Tara in her time there, took Belle under his wing and acted as a surrogate father.
Thafer trained Belle until, fourteen years later, the illithids attacked.
Their strike was swift and without mercy. Betrayed to the psionic creatures by one of their own, the Slayers were caught unprepared for the vicious assault on their home. In retribution for the meddling of the Tash'nora over the years, the illithids wiped out almost three-quarters of the monastery's population in a single night, Thafer among them. Those that survived fled from the mountains and scattered, some retreating to other monasteries while others set off on their own. Belle disappeared into the wilderness, where she had previously spent much time with his surrogate father. She only emerged every so often to "test his skills" before melting back into the trees.
She has since been spotted around Avalon, apparently having taken up residence in the city of adventures.
