This actually makes the rat, who was the runt of a litter living in the walls of Eddie's apartment, more comfortable, because it means that it doesn't feel singled out despite its elevated position as a familiar, a sure way to end up being eaten by predators. Eddie is extremely protective of and affectionate towards his little rat [take that however you like, you pervs] and because of his Sleight of Hand skill and hidden pockets, it is almost impossible to tell that he has a familiar at all, as he takes pains not to advertise this fact. Character History:
Edward Sly grew up on the tough side of town, but he's always been a shrewd operator. Where he grew up, there were two sides on the streets: those who kept the law, and those who broke it, each side engaged in a brutal struggle with the other, where no holds were barred. Most young males in such circumstances find it easiest to turn to the side of the law that brings in the most hard cash, but Fast Eddie wasn't that sort of person - he wanted to make things better, instead of worse. Forsaking his roots, and shaming his family in the process, the ratkin signed up with a local mercenary company, making several world travels, before returning to his home town in Avalon City to join the local police force. There he soon distinguished himself as an excellent inspector, and was soon given a degree of freedom to allow him to operate in a more unconventional (and completely deniable) fashion against the city's underworld. Putting his shrewd mind to work, Eddie now puts his all into solving crimes, the effort a monumental feat when he finds himself pitted against the undergirdings of society itself, but one which the stubborn detective refuses to give up.
Questionnaire
A: Appearance
Lean and lithe, this twentysomething ratling's dirty grey fur seems to be infused with the color of the back-alleys that he often frequents. Wearing a long coat with deep pockets, and a broad-brimmed hat that served well to cover his astonishingly average features, it is very easy for a casual viewer to simply let this male fade into the background. Without his long coat and broad hat and other concealing clothes, however, Fast Eddie is revealed to be a lean, wiry-muscled individual, possessing astonishing strength for his size, his body covered in a variety of concealed blades that would otherwise be impossible to see. His eyes are large and dark, and seem to miss nothing, while his whiskers are almost constantly twitching when he is in a state of deep thought, which is often.
B & C: Birth and Family, Eductaion and Work
Fast Eddie was born a ratling, the son of ratlings, just one in a sizable litter in the teeming metropolis of Avalon City. His full proper name is Eduardo Joachim Consuella Maltese. His mother, Consuella Vardas Maria Maltese, was a single parent who had far too many mouths to feed, and far too little money to do it. She was part of the criminal class, as were all of Fast Eddie's siblings as soon as they were old enough to start learning the trade of second story work, pickpocketing, and other lines of crime as suited their natural skills, body types, and temperaments best.
Because he had such a big family, Fast Eddie quickly learned to treasure his time alone more than precious gold. This led him to spend far less time with his siblings than any of his other brothers or sisters did. More than most ratlings, in fact, who tend to be a highly communal living people, and who find comfort in large groups. He never really developed any significantly close relationships with those around him, keeping his relations limited to those who were useful to him, or to whom he was useful. He did, however, always make sure that his family was provided for, at least to the best of his ability. But there were always more mouths to feed, and Fast Eddie couldn't stand watching the younger ones starve, leading him to distance himself even more from his siblings.
Fast Eddie's preference for solitude and his lean, agile body and keen senses soon led him to become a skilled second story rat, safecracker, and troubleshooter. His nickname, Fast Eddie, came from his blinding speed in a back alley knife fight, and for how fast he could pull out one weapon after another whenever he needed one. It was during his forays into the illegal that he was eventually - perhaps inevitably - caught by the Avalon City guard, right in the middle of one of the biggest jewel heists of his criminal career. Taken before a judge with a sense of leniency, Fast Eddie was given the choice: spend time doing the back-breaking work of the chain gangs, or else join the Avalon City Militia, and serve in various foreign lands defending the rights of his city. The former course seemed like a bad idea to the skinny ratling. That left the latter, and so Fast Eddie signed up with the foreign legion.
In the legion, Fast Eddie quickly discovered that who he had been was no longer an issue. In fact, it was rude to bring up the past. All that mattered to his unit was if he could do what he was told, and do it well. Before long, Fast Eddie proved himself a more than capable scout and saboteur, and he threw himself eagerly into the service of his city-state. During this time, Fast Eddie's outlook on life expanded and changed draastically, and he soon learned the critical importance of thinking about others before himself.
After his eventual honorable discharge, Fast Eddie returned to Avalon City, ending up right back in the slums he'd left. Rather than go back to his former way of life and the company of the many criminal acquaintances he'd accumulated over time, Fast Eddie instead went to the Avalon City guard, and signed into the force as a cop. His dedication to the service and his intelligence and skill in hunting down criminals eventually led him to gain the rank of detective on the special taskforce, and he is presently allowed a fairly significant amount of freedom of action. This is a good thing, as it turns out, because it allows Fast Eddie to keep himself mostly clear of the rampant corruption that plagues most of the Avalon City police force.
D: Friends
Growing up, Fast Eddie was always the quiet sort, preferring to read what books he could scrounge rather than spend time with other people. This led to him making few friends, but many acquaintances and contacts, who grew to appreciate the interesting information he had available, and the skill he developed in using it.
It wasn't until Fast Eddie joined the foreign legion that he made actual friends with two people: Sergeant Van, a dwarf and his direct superior, and Lilah Case, a fellow recruit. Sergeant Van was Fast Eddie's drill instructor, and later his sergeant in the field. The two gradually developed a strong working relationship, in which Van told Eddie what to do, and Eddie performed his tasks with exactness. Eventually this developed into a drinking buddy relationship, and Sergeant Van, on his own retirement, was the one who helped Fast Eddie get accepted into the police force. This friendship, sadly, ended when Fast Eddie was forced to bring in his friend on charges of corruption, the evidence irrefutable.
Lilah Case was a halfling scout, and the two spent a lot of time together in the field in their roles as scouts and saboteurs. They quickly grew into a strong relationship of friendship, being quite skilled at reading each others' body language. No real romance ever blossomed between the two, but they did have occasional recreational sex, no strings attached, just to blow off tension. Lilah Case was a spoiled rich girl who had decided to join the foreign legion to sate her desires for adventure, and when her term ended, while Eddie left the service to join the Avalon City police, Lilah decided to sign on for another stint, which is where she still is. The two still correspond regularly.
Presently, Abby is Fast Eddie's first true romance. This infernal-blooded but good-aligned halfling is the mother of Eddie's child, and presently they live together in an abandoned hotel in the side of the city ruined by the Dark One's assault.
E: Attitudes and Beliefs
Perhaps because of his upbringing, combined with his natural intellect, Fast Eddie is as close to an agnostic as can be possible in a world where the gods are obviously real entities. He tends to take a live-and-let-live stance towards the gods, prefering that they leave him alone and not interfere with how he lives his life. He hasn't spent much time thinking about the afterlife, being far too focused on the material concerns of his present life. If something that is part of the supernatural world doesn't play any active role in his daily life or in understanding an aspect of a case, then he doesn't consider it in any great detail.
Though Fast Eddie might not have much to do with religion, he has a very strong moral code. He refuses to take bribes, to compromise his standards as a police officer and a detective, or to work for criminals in any conscious capacity. Life is not as important as justice in his philosophy, and it is worth dying for as well as worth killing for. However, Fast Eddie does understand the need for discretion. He never compromises his standards or his behavior. That doesn't mean, though, that he lets others know this all the time. Having a seedy appearance has allowed Eddie to blend more easily with criminal elements and to acquire the information that he needs in order to better strike at the heart of criminal enterprise. He will lie and steal to this end, but he does his best to make reparations afterward to the innocent. His end goal is to bring the guilty to justice, and to purge society of its darkest, most vile elements. In the process, however, he has to constantly struggle not to become the very thing that he fights, or worse.
Eddie is a pragmatist as well as an idealist. Magic, for him, is just another tool to allow him to accomplish his goals, to be respected, but not feared for its own sake, and other supernatural elements and even the most fearsome monsters are simply things to be puzzled out and understood, then overcome if necessary, put to use if possible, or ignored. Knowledge of any sort is only interesting if it is useful in some fashion. Sex is something he goes without far too often, like food, drink, and sleep, and he regards it as one of those necessities of life, but not one that rules him. The job, the endless quest for justice, is the most important thing, and Eddie will see his goals through to the end, no matter what, as long as there exists any valid reason to continue doing so. Nothing else really matters, be is power, wealth, fame, or anything else. Until he met Abby, Eddie felt the same way about love, though he has now somewhat modified his views on that front.
F: Edges and Flaws
The first and most obvious of Fast Eddie's talents is his speed. He can be blindingly fast, his body and mind working in constant synchrony. When confronted with a problem, be is an opponent, a trap, a locked door, a puzzle, or anything else, Eddie devotes all of his abilities to overcoming this problem, working it this way and that at all angles until the problem finally cracks.
This extreme dedication of physical and mental exertion can make Eddie seem uncaring while he is in the middle of overcoming a problem, since nothing else is able to penetrate his focused mind unless it becomes a part of that problem. While Fast Eddie is able to multitask to a degree, he tends to let social considerations and niceties drop first.
In general, Eddie is free of significant vices, since these can be used for blackmail purposes. However, he does have a weakness for tobacco. Though Eddie takes great pains to keep his fur and clothes from smelling like smoke, and grooms himself fastidiously to keep from showing any nicotine stains on fur or fingers, he still can sometimes be given away in the dark by the glow of the ember at the end of one of his cigarrettes. And when he is in a state of extremely deep thought, he has a bad habit of shifting into chainsmoking unconsciously, though he does his best to go cold turkey for a few days afterward to get the nicotine overload out of his system.
Though he only has a few significant flaws, Eddie's greatest problem is part of doing the job honestly. Because he cannot be bribed or blackmailed, criminals tend to strongly dislike Eddie once they find out about his nature. Organized crime especially hates Fast Eddie and his gradual working up their ranks. The Syndicate is the worst of these enemies, and Fast Eddie ranks midway on several of their listings of people who need to be made to dissappear.
G: Likes and Dislikes and Fears
Above all else, Fast Eddie likes having time alone to his thoughts. He is a very private individual, and though he does have some strong emotional ties to a very rare few, he honestly prefers to be devoted to his job and to the pursuit of justice. This gives him a sense of purpose and inner peace that carries him through whatever else might come.
Also above all else, Fast Eddie hates injustice. This applies to all levels, and Eddie feels personally responsible for doing all he can to correct the constant imbalances that exist in society. However, he also believes in the need for order in society, and so whenever possible, he does his best to work within the law in accomplishing this goal of universal justice. His hate of injustice can become focused in individuals, however, and this is one of the few instances in which he will break the law, if he has studied it out, and discovered beyond any doubt that the murder of or theft from one individual or small group of individuals will actually lead to correcting some of the imbalance of justice that exists. Since this is such a heavy decision, however, Eddie seldom does so, and only after extensive agonizing and research to ensure that this really is the wisest and most direct course of successful action.
Troubling his sleep at times is the thought that Eddie might actually end up being used by the very forces that he is fighting against. As a mid-level officer of the law, a detective assigned to hunt down criminal elements, Eddie is also a part of the chain of command. That means that, if there is corruption at the top, he suddenly becomes a potential tool for that corruption. Eddie also fears deeply for Abby's safety, and for the safety of any of his friends. It is this fear that encourages Eddie not to become too deeply emotionally tied to others.

5) Please describe your characters general background, this may be any length you wish, but at least one paragraph. You may use any or all of the information above, or new information not covered. (Encouraged)
All of his life, Fast Eddie has grown up around monsters of various sorts. They are common in the sewers of Avalon City, and as a ratling, the sewers were a second home to him. Of course, as a part of growing up, he learned, as did all the ratlings who survived to adulthood, how to best avoid the many hazards of the darkness below the streets. Monsters, therefore, are not a terror to him in their own right, but simply another obstacle in the way of his goals.
From an early age, Fast Eddie picked up on the basics of magical use from the tattered travel spellbook of an adventuring wizard who had been less wise about his travel in the sewers than a typical ratling. The crude sketches and haphazard notes of the wizard were a constant puzzle to Eddie, but his keen intellect gradually unravelled these puzzles one by one, until finally he found that he was able to use them to work out basic cantrips. The first time he made light float on his palm, Eddie felt a deep sense of satisfaction, the feeling that came to him whenever he acquired and learned to properly use any new tool or secret of the trade.
Rat is the name as well as the species of Fast Eddie's familiar. The rat was a runt, a weak little rat that had been driven out by his fellows and left to die. Eddie felt pity for the rat, but also could not bring himself to simply adopt a freeloader whom nature had rejected, and so he found a compromise by binding Rat to him with the ritual to acquire a familiar. Now Rat earns his keep by assisting Eddie in his detective work as another pair of eyes and an occasional scout. Rat is totally devoted to Eddie, and Eddie, in his turn, quietly cares about the rat, though he doesn't show it often, except in his efforts to keep Rat safe from all danger or harm. Because of Eddie's care in this regard, Rat's presence is usually never even noticed by others, though he is almost always somewhere on Eddie's person whenever he is clothed.
Eddie's clothes are a point of careful engineering by the city grey ratling. His overcoat covers several straps and springs and an interconnected harness onto which Eddie has fastened most of his equipment, that which he doesn't stuff into his pockets. With a few light movements, Eddie can cause spring-loaded blades to leap from his sleeves into his hands in a heartbeat, while a flick of his tail will make another blade slide down the back of his coat to lock into place at the end of his tail. This is a movement that Fast Eddie has practiced extensively, until now it is second nature. The harness generally ensures that Eddie will have everything that he needs on his person, and will be able to draw it whenever he needs it.
