Class Abilities:
Maneuvers: You begin your career with knowledge of six martial maneuvers. The disciplines available to you are Desert Wind, Diamond Mind, Setting Sun, Shadow Hand,
Stone Dragon, and Tiger Claw. Once you know a maneuver, you must ready it before you can use it (see Maneuvers Readied, below). A maneuver usable by swordsages is
considered an extraordinary ability unless otherwise noted in its description. Your maneuvers are not affected by spell resistance, and you do not provoke attacks of
opportunity when you initiate one.
You learn additional maneuvers at higher levels, as shown on the above table. You must meet a maneuver’s prerequisite to learn it. See details on Blade Magic or
the bottom of this page, to determine the highest-level maneuvers you can learn. Upon reaching 4th level, and at every even-numbered swordsage level after that
(6th, 8th, 10th, and so on), you can choose to learn a new maneuver in place of one you already know. In effect, you lose the old maneuver in exchange for the new one. You can choose a new maneuver of any level you like, as long as you observe your restriction on the highest-level maneuvers you know; you need not replace the old maneuver with a maneuver of the same level. For example, upon reaching 10th level, you could trade in a single 1st-, 2nd-, 3rd- or 4th-level maneuver for a maneuver of 5th level or lower, as long as you meet the prerequisite of the new maneuver. You can swap only a single maneuver at any given level.
Maneuvers Per Encounter: You have four maneuvers per encounter at level 1, and as you advance in level and learn more maneuvers, you are able to use more in a
single encounter.
You begin an encounter with all your maneuvers unexpended, regardless of how many times you might have already used them since you chose them. When you initiate
a maneuver, you expend it for the current encounter, so each of your maneuvers can be used once per encounter unless you recover them. You can recover an expended
maneuver by using a fullround action to quickly meditate. Doing this does not provoke attacks of opportunity. If you complete your meditation, you can choose one
expended maneuver to refresh. It is now available for use in a subsequent round.
Stances Known: You begin play with knowledge of one 1st-level stance from any discipline open to you. At 2nd, 5th, 9th, 14th, and 20th level, you can choose
additional stances. Unlike maneuvers, stances are not expended, and you do not have to ready them. All the stances you know are available to you at all times, and
you can change the stance you currently use as a swift action. A stance is an extraordinary ability unless otherwise stated in the stance description. Unlike with
maneuvers, you cannot learn a new stance at higher levels in place of one you already know.
Discipline Focus (Ex): As a swordsage, you can focus your training to take advantage of each discipline’s fighting style. Each time you gain the discipline focus
ability, select one of the six swordsage disciplines to which that focus applies. You can select a different discipline each time you gain discipline focus, but you
must know at least one martial maneuver from the selected discipline. Even if you select a different discipline at higher levels, your discipline choice for earlier
abilities does not change.
This focus manifests in the following ways:
Weapon Focus (Setting Sun): At 1st level, you gain the benefit of the Weapon Focus feat for weapons associated with the chosen discipline.
Quick to Act (Ex): You gain a +1 bonus on initiative checks. This bonus increases by 1 at 5th, 10th, 15th, and 20th level.
Racial Abilities:
Human characters get a +2 bonus to one ability score of their choice at creation to represent their varied nature.
Medium: Humans are Medium creatures and have no bonuses or penalties due to their size.
Normal Speed: Humans have a base speed of 30 feet.
Bonus Feat: Humans select one extra feat at 1st level.
Skilled: Humans gain an additional four skill points at first level, and an additional one at every level after.
Languages: Humans begin play speaking Common. Humans with high Intelligence scores can choose any languages they want (except secret languages, such as Druidic).

Questionnaire:
A: Appearance
1) Describe yourself as someone meeting you for the first time would see you. (Race?, Gender?, Age?, Size? Coloration? Attractiveness?, Dress? Do you try to emphasize or hide any of these features?)
Iaea is a medium height human female, with dark tanned skin, brown hair, and distinct yellow eyes. She looks to be somewhere in the late teens or early twenties, with a slight curvy figure, though she does try to hide that when possible. Her face and looks would generally be considered cute, though sometimes her mannerisms can come across a little blunt or rude.
2) What other details would someone notice on a closer look? (Distinguishing marks, birthmarks, scars, etc?)
The most distinguishing detail is most likely the yellow eyes. However, on her left shoulder, she has a small, heart-shaped birth mark as well.
3) Do you have a distinctive way of speaking or any other mannerisms or memorable behavior?
Iaea is a little direct, and isn’t afraid to be blunt when she feels the situation calls for it. If unhappy, she’ll cross her arms and look away from the source of her irritation. Lastly, she is rather noticeably lazy…
B: Birth and Family
1) Where and when were you born? (Also good to include: Do you know your exact birthdate? Did anything unusual (storms, accidents, deaths, etc?) happen about the same time, with which some people might still associate your birthdate?)
Iaea was born on a pretty normal day in the Serewind Plains. While she doesn’t know her exact birthdate, they count her age by how many full moons she has been around to enjoy.
2) Who are your parents? (Names, Occupations, Social class, Were they married?, Are they still alive? are all good things to include)
Her mother’s name is Sejiri, while her father’s name is Tonis. They’re both members of the Stone Builder Tribe, and are accomplished farmers. Married, Iaea is the 3rd child, out of 6 so far.
3) Do you have any siblings? (If so, it would be good to describe them as you did your parents above.)
Iaea is the 3rd child out of 6. She was two older sisters, three younger brothers. Their names are Tonaka, Kaelia, Jin, Nain, and Raen, in order from oldest to youngest. Tomaka and Kaelia are both married, while the three boys still live with Iaea’s parents.
4) Do you know any members of your extended family? (grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins? Also would be good to describe them as above)
Considering Iaea lived with an extended family, this will be a long list of names. Living relatives include Jael and Yunai, Iaea’s grandparents on her mother’s side, aunts Haeli, Fael, and Elaya, uncles Gin and Warn, and cousins Trae, Harun, Oslin, Zio, Naen, Buji, Yulai, Pan, and Crin.
5) How did you get along with your family?
She got along well enough with her family; though do to her lazy attitude, more often than not she would avoid her chores. She really hated her farming life, which was probably one of her biggest motivations to leave home. She especially loved her grandparents, and continues to miss them dearly being so far away from them.
C: Education and Work
1) Did you serve an apprenticeship in order to learn your current profession/class? For how long?
Somewhat. Jin, her father’s adopted father, of whom she has a brother named after, is who taught her the skills she knows today. A master of an unusual fighting technique, he taught Iaea how to defend herself in the greater world, just as he had taught her father. She spent some 10 years under his tutorship, visiting him some three days a week in that time.
2) If you were not an apprentice, how did you learn your trade/skills/ect? Formal schooling? Informal Teachers? Self-Taught?
See above!
3) Who was your master or teacher? (Race? Gender? Appearance? Personality?) Is he/she still alive? How were you treated? Are/Were you on good terms with your master?
Jin is something of a monk from far outside the Plains, hailing from somewhere back east. An elderly human, he seemed to be mystical in nature, with an almost endless amount of patience. He had a good sense of humor, and had the uncanny ability to eat an almost endless amount of food, and never gain a pound…
4) Did your teacher have any other apprentices or students? Who were they? Did you get along?
Iaea happened to study alone with her master, though he did sometimes play with the younger kids in games using a ball.
5) Due to the rarity of literacy in this setting, how important are books, writings, letters, ect. to your character? Regardless as to whether or not he/she can read?
Not very. She doesn’t read, has no interest in learning, and finds the idea of learning so, boring.
6) Do you have a job other than "adventurer"? Who do you work for? How much of your time does this require?
Not currently, but she’s looking for one!
D: Friends
1) Who were your friends as a child? As an adolescent? As an adult?
Despite everything, Iaea was something of a loner as a child. She didn’t like playing with other kids, seeing it as almost pointless at an early age. Her best friend was her master, Jin.
2) How many of these people are still alive? How many are you still friends with?
Jin is still alive. Probably eating something this very moment, with his bottomless stomach…
3) Who is/was your best friend? What is the most memorable thing that the two of you ever did
together?
Still Jin. One of the most memorable things the two of them ever did, was help construct a shack together. Jin needed a place to keep some cleaning equipment, and so Iaea and Jin helped gather, measure, and cut the wood needed for it. It was a simple project, but Iaea had a lot of fun doing it.
4) What do you look for in a friend?
Iaea enjoys people who are loyal, trustworthy, and eccentric in some way. She enjoys it when people have some sort of quirk that makes them interesting. Be it an exotic heritage or background, or some sort of disorder, she loves abnormal!
5) Have you ever been in love? Was it reciprocated? Do you have (or have you had) a boy-/girlfriend, a lover, or a spouse? More than one? Are you looking for one? What do you look for in a romantic partner?
At this time, Iaea’s never been in love. She wouldn’t mind a partner one day, but currently, that realm of life is pretty unknown for her. She doesn’t really know what she’d even want in a partner…though she does suppose she’d at least want someone interesting and loyal.
E: Attitudes and Beliefs
1) What are your beliefs about religion and the afterlife? Do you follow any particular god or gods? What appeals to you most about this religion? Least?
Iaea isn’t particularly religious herself. She has a moral code that she lives by, but as per specific diety…she has a hard enough time being motivated to do things for herself, let alone on behalf of someone else. She likes the concept of having someone there to maybe help you faith wise in times of need, but doesn’t like the rigors of actually worshipping.
2) Where do spirits of nature, the elements and the dead fit into these beliefs?
Spirits of nature and elementals are just like any other creature to her. The undead are a little scary, but she doesn’t hate them. Since most undead are usually evil and will attack her, she’ll put them down. But if there was say, a good ghost or vampire, that didn’t harm people, she would let it exist without trouble.
3) What gods, religions, or priesthoods will you have nothing to do with?
Pretty much anything that deals with the hurting of others when it could be avoided, or the removal of one’s personal freedom is beyond what she’s ever willing to work with.
4) What is your moral code? Under what conditions will you kill? Steal? Lie? Do you have a personal code of behavior about violence? Magic? Sex? Dealing with Evil Beings?
Iaea’s moral code is pretty fluid, but it has some standard pillars. She will never kill unless someone else is out to take her life, freedom, or possessions she needs to exist. She hates to give a lie, but will do so if it’s for the greater good. Stealing is bad unless it’s for survival, or required to defeat something very evil. She’s perfectly fine with pointless violence, if there’s no actual death. Magic is something to be acknowledged as helpful, but always be cautious around. Sex…is still something she’s not very aware of personally. Mentally she’d like to have some commitment behind sex, and isn’t one for pointless sex to feel good. Rape is bad 100% of the time. Dealing with evil beings is a neutral point. Unless the evil being is out to hurt people, she will let it be. If the evil being is going to do actual evil things, she will deal with it.
5) How committed are you to seeing through something (a task, quest, bargain, etc) that you have started?
Since Iaea is hard to motivate under normal means, if she actually starts a task, she will commit to it till the end.
6) How important are the following to you?: Power, Wealth, Fame, Honor, Family, Friends, Love, Knowledge, Religion, Your job? To what lengths would you go to acquire or preserve these things?
Power is not even a motivation. Wealth is fine, but only to actually live comfortably. Iaea has no desire to be rich, or famous for that matter. Honor is only important in the regard of not trouncing one of her moral guidelines. Family is something she regards very important, friends as well. She would fight till the bitter end to defend either. Love, in theory, would also be something she’d value and defend with her entire being. Knowledge and religion can go out the window. If she had a job, depending on what it is, she would be willing to defend it if she enjoyed it.
7) How often do you remember your dreams? How much attention do you pay to them? Do they inspire you? Guide you? Inspire You? Warn you? Frighten You?
Iaea doesn’t dream often, and when she does, she doesn’t really put much stock in them for them to be a motivation or a factor in her day to day life.
8) What is your attitude towards magic? People who use it? Fearsome monsters? The unknown in general?
Iaea barely understands magic. She knows it can help people, but it can hurt others as well. She cares more about the character behind the person using the magic, more than magic itself. Fearsome monsters are not really a bother, unless the fearsome monsters are actually out to hurt her. She doesn’t really worry about the unknown. Why worry about what you have no knowledge of?
F: Edges and Flaws
1) What are you especially good at? What sets you apart from the rest of the world? A skill? An unusual knack? A certain flair of style or wit?
She’s good at farming, cooking, cleaning, and laying some smackdown. Only one of those things does she actually enjoy. She can be handy with a blade, but she hates heavy armor. But if you’re able to motivate her to actually try and get her to cook you something to eat, your tastebuds might be surprised. She’d be a good housewife if she actually tried.
2) What flaws do you have? Bad habits? Obsessions? Terrible (or embarrassing) secrets?
Her only true flaw is her laziness. She might be a bit blunt and rude, but she doesn’t go out of her way to actually hurt the feelings of people she likes. Since it can be hard for her to get motivated, this can lead to a waste of time on her part.
3) Do you have any enemies? How much trouble do those conflicts cause you?
Her immortal enemy is cleaning. She haaaaaaaaates cleaning. Not herself, she has good personal hygiene, but cleaning a house is like asking her to fight a red dragon by herself. She’d rather take on the dragon!
G: Likes and Dislikes
1) What do you love? (People? Places? Creatures? Kinds of Food? Activities? Subjects?)
She loves good food she doesn’t have to cook, sleeping, staring at clouds, and dwarves. Not physically, per say, but she finds dwarves to be the most amusing, whimsical creatures on the planet. This is because she grew up next to them, and found them to be somewhat fascinating.
2) What do you hate? How do you typically react to these hated things?
Cleaning, chores in general. Housework and doing anything akin to farm work ever again is something she has no motivation to do for as long as she lives.
3) What do you fear? What is your worst nightmare?
Iaea’s worst fear would have to be, somehow, becoming enslaved to something dark and evil. The removal of personal freedom is, by itself, a scary thought, but to be the tool or pet to some sort of demon or devil, would be the worst situation possible in Iaea’s mind.
H: Miscellaneous
1) Describe your first encounter with a nonhuman monster. (Not counting player races, animals, etc that you grew up with, but feel free to mention them too)
Iaea’s not been exposed to anything terribly nonhuman. The closest thing would be a small raid that happened on her village by some orcs. When she was a little girl, a group of ten orcs or so harassed the farms on the terraces, looking for some free food. She watched from the window, only being 8 at the time, as Jin drove the orcs off single-handedly. It was her motivation for actually wanting to train under him.
2) If you are a spellcaster, describe your first experience with using magic. What were the circumstances? Were you expecting it?
No magic here!
3)If you have an animal companion or familiar, describe how you acquired it. Describe this ally's personality, and its attitude towards you. (Loyal unto death, mischievous, lazy, etc)
Iaea grew up with several farm animals, but no companions or familiars.
4) If you have any unusual possessions, describe how you acquired them. Is their value practical, monetary, sentimental or some combination of these?
Iaea tries not to put sentimental value into objects. She feels that the best place for such feelings, is in her own heart and mind. That way, no one can ever take them away from her. Except maybe a mind flayer. But those can be killed.
5) Please describe your characters general background, this may be any length you wish, but at least one paragraph. You may use any or all of the information above, or new information not covered. (Encouraged)
Iaea was born to a human couple of the Stone Builders Tribe, deep in the heart of the Serewind Plains. She spent much of her early life helping her family with terraced farming, working in the sun for long hours to seek out an honest living with the harshness of the region. She grew up alongside dwarves within the tribe, and to this day, looks upon the race with a strong sense of awe and amusement. As she grew up, she grew more and more curious with the world far outside the boundaries of the Plains, and eventually found herself taking a boat from Lanxotl to explore the land beyond and see what it had to offer her.
