Character History:
The Gray Orcs of Morius’ clan are unusual in some regards: several generations ago they claimed a small area of land for themselves, fighting off other claimants to hold the land and in the process making some unlikely partnerships. One such alliance was with a priest of Bahamut who offered assistance to the clan during attempts to repel a rival clan that had been lulled into raiding their lands by Tiamat.
The priest’s assistance came with a price however, the right to remain among the clan as an equal, an honour he earned and which has endured for all the years since. His presence has had a mellowing affect on the tribe and led them to adopt certain tolerances to other races and some human traits, particularly in the addition of titles and family names.
Marius Felbrecht was named under this convention; he was born with uncharacteristically large ears, earning him the name More Ears of the family Foul Breath, a family name of great pride won by his grandfather. Fortunately, the transition from Wildlander to Common improves the sound considerably.
For the most part, Marius had a fairly unremarkable upbringing, he was not the strongest, nor the fastest, in many ways a disappointment to his parents, strong warriors both, but he was among the most practical and intuitive of his clan. A trait that was immediately recognised by the tribe’s shamans after he passed his rite of passage into adulthood through mental fortitude and cunning rather than strength of arms.
As an apprentice, he showed promise in focusing his mind, understanding the fundaments of orcish philosophy and the energy of all things, but the god’s never answered his prayers. He came to be seen as a bad omen and was shunned by the shamans and warriors alike who believed he might bring misfortune upon them in battle.
It was the now aged priest of Bahamut who intervened, taking Morius as a pupil, one of only a few he had recruited in his time with the orcs. Bahamut answered his prayers no more than the other gods, but he proved adept at the healing arts, studying how to mend wounds and treat the injuries of his brothers.
He stayed as an apprentice for years under the priest, learning how to read and write and focus himself. It was also during this time that he met his wife to be, a young drow with a foxes tail brought to the mission as a captive after being found unconscious and injured. The priest was charged with nursing her to health and finding out whether she was a threat. This duty in turn fell to Morius as a test of his skills.
For days he tended her wounds while she lay unconscious, but it was after she awoke that his life became difficult. She was strong willed and demanding, viewing him as a beast and a slave, reluctant even to accept his aid and resisting more viciously every day as she recovered until every visit became a battle between their prides and a struggle to hold her still long enough to treat her. Duty kept him focussed on the task, but he couldn’t help developing a strong curiosity about the girl, she was something completely alien to him and it intrigued him in ways he couldn’t describe and he came to relish their confrontations.
The situation continued for some time with his interest for her rising until one night during the celebrations of a successful raid against a neighbour Marius indulged too much in the free flowing spirits and egged on by the festivities and the victorious spirit of his people he went to her room to claim her as his woman. He has no other memories of that night except waking in her bed the next morning naked, bruised and suffering from a pounding headache. It was only then that she told him her name: Killian Quar’valsharess.
Their relationship flourished from that point as she remained in the mission, studying as a follower of Bahamut and they were soon married in secret under the eyes of that watchful God.
This was not the most profound effect the priest of Bahamut was to have on his life, no, that was still to come. Through his tutoring and access to the library of books, something stirred in Morius, his intuitive grasp understanding of certain fundamental truths of the universe awakened his mind to a new power, something he had only read about in the vaguest of the texts he had read and so he took his first steps on the path of the Ardent.
This path would lead him and his new wife away from his home, she wished to explore the larger world and be devoted to her he was more than happy to take the opportunity to discover more about his abilities, knowledge that could only come through experience or from others like him.
Taking his greataxe he departed from his clan in peace, though some were happier to see him go than others. His parents presented him with his grandfather’s bone mail armour as a parting gift, fervent in the hope that it might protect him from harm and that he might return from his adventures as a true orc warrior.
Speck is a turkey that attacked Morius during the quest Dat Ass, it is thus far the single creature to injure him the most and earned his reluctant respect. As such he has decided to keep it as a pet and after putting it in a cage has taken it home to act as a house guard while he is away on a quest.
I hope the wife approves…
A: Appearance
1) Describe yourself as someone meeting you for the first time would see you. (Race?, Gender?, Age?, Size? Coloration? Attractiveness?, Dress? Do you try to emphasize or hide any of these features?)
Morius is a young male Grey Orc, typical of his kind, standing at 6’5” with straight black hair cropped short into a mane down the back of his head with savage delicacy, his steel blue eyes are wary of strangers, but hint at intelligence or at least a deep practically and rationality above many of his kin. His tusks are short, but clean and unbroken. Other than those features, he was content at first to look the savage wearing the bone mail armour of his ancestors with his polished and sharpened greataxe clearly displayed on his back, but over time he has replaced these with more sophisticated equipment, now bedecked in shining plate armour of dwarven craft, bearing a greataxe of deep crystal hues and adorned with a myriad collection of magic items likely never seen among the settlement of his origins. He has few trophies of his life before he left his home, but has taken pains to display the colourful fetishes of his tribe tied into his hair and from his axe, he has also begun to contemplate a range of psionic tattoos bearing symbols of his clan, wishing to draw strength from his origins, despite how far away they might be.
2) What other details would someone notice on a closer look? (Distinguishing marks, birthmarks, scars, etc?)
Unlike many Orcs, Morius has few battle scars other than those of ritual and right of passage owing to his unconventional abilities and upbringing. Of course, those unfamiliar with his kind might just view that as a factor of his youth, those with experience may be able to determine that he had was missing the scars of the warrior, and nor did he hold more than the beginning signs of giving himself to the worship of Gruumsh, none of which were displayed proudly.
3) Do you have a distinctive way of speaking or any other mannerisms or memorable behaviour?
Morius is educated in speaking his natural Wildlander tongue, along with common and draconic, though in the latter two his speech is often simple and to the point, though his common has certainly improved during his time in the cities. He sees little point in beating around the bush on a subject. Except when talking in private with his wife or on the subjects closest to his heart, like those from which his powers are drawn, these subjects come more naturally to him.
B: Birth and Family
1) Where and when were you born? (Also good to include: Do you know your exact birthdate? Did anything unusual (storms, accidents, deaths, etc?) happen about the same time, with which some people might still associate your birthdate?)
His birth was not unusual, nor is it the habit of his clan to mark specific dates, age is determined by month and only the close family specifically will tend to celebrate the passing of the year.
2) Who are your parents? (Names, Occupations, Social class, Were they married?, Are they still alive? are all good things to include)
His parents remain with his Orc tribe: his father, last he was seen was a powerful fighter in the clan, though not a leading figure and his with few prospects for ever reaching that stage as his age will soon cause him to be replaced by younger blood. His mother was one of his father’s numerous mates and Morius was not close to her, the burden of rearing children was shared among all females of the clan.
3) Do you have any siblings? (If so, it would be good to describe them as you did your parents above.)
His father sired a number of other children, but the harsh upbringing, hostile landscape, strict rites of passage and frequent deaths in combat take their toll. Morius is aware of only one surviving full-brother – too young to yet pass his rite of passage – and a handful of half brothers, proud fighters all, with the family rounded out by a couple of sisters likely already mothers themselves.
4) Do you know any members of your extended family? (grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins? Also would be good to describe them as above)
Beyond the direct family is the clan, with familial ties incorporating forming a tenuous link across many members, it is the for the clan shaman to keep track of these and few others know links of greater than a couple of generations.
5) How did you get along with your family?
There was some friction, the family had always taken a dismissive view of him due to his lack of status in any of the clans ‘traditional’ roles and although they were not so quick to spurn him as other members of the clan, they would rarely support him overtly. His birth mother particularly held him in disfavour as his unusual abilities and behaviour were seen as a defect inherited from her as none of his father’s other sons bore such telling features, this made her almost as much a pariah as he was himself.
His parents were particularly pleased to see him (and his wife, though they did not know of the marriage) leave the clan for adventure in the hope that if he returns, he returns as a true Orc, worthy of the clan.
C: Education and Work
1) Did you serve an apprenticeship in order to learn your current profession/class? For how long?
Morius studied under the aged cleric of Bahumut who tried vainly to influence his clan, over this time Morius learned many things including how to read, write and worship alongside the man. His key training though was to overcome his races more aggressive nature, in part through learning how to heal the injuries inflicted on other or were inflicted on him and in part through strength of will and focus.
2) If you were not an apprentice, how did you learn your trade/skills/ect? Formal schooling? Informal Teachers? Self-Taught?
The Gods never spoke to him though, neither Gruumsh and the Orc pantheon or Bahumut, no, his power was self taught from an instinctive understanding of the principles taught to him, the rules upon which the universe existed, even if he didn’t fully comprehend them, he discovered how to manipulate them.
3) Who was your master or teacher? (Race? Gender? Appearance? Personality?) Is he/she still alive? How were you treated? Are/Were you on good terms with your master?
The cleric of Bahumut was human as far as could be determined, but the aged and decrepit figure had been with the clan for generations, the result of a deal struck in the gravest times for the clan that few living members could remember. Despite his age, the cleric was good-natured, patient and fair with the impetuous and impudent Morius, instilling in him some of the preachers calm.
4) Did your teacher have any other apprentices or students? Who were they? Did you get along?
Morius was the only Orc student, though travellers bearing news, trade or messages were sometimes allowed to visit by the clan. Other than these temporary guests, his only partner student over the course of his study was his wife to be: Killian Quar’Valsharess, who he nursed to health after her escape from the Underdark, though her studies differed significantly from his own.
5) Due to the rarity of literacy in this setting, how important are books, writings, letters, etc. to your character? Regardless as to whether or not he/she can read?
The ability to read and grasp the concepts written in books were key to awakening the power within Morius and as such he views books with a deep respect, he does not need them to develop his powers, but if given the opportunity he would readily study them for greater insight at his own slow pace. Letters do not serve so great a purpose, he has few people to write to and fewer still who would understand the written word or respond.
6) Do you have a job other than "adventurer"? Who do you work for? How much of your time does this require?
His only other occupation is Husband, and that is a full-time commitment where even sick days aren’t allowed.
D: Friends
1) Who were your friends as a child? As an adolescent? As an adult?
In his early childhood, Morius was much like the other children in his clan, growing up with the other Orcs of his clan, but the differences quickly became apparent and those who were once his friend began to distance themselves from him, though he caught the eyes of others, including the clans Shamans. This became more pronounced until his rite of passage and even more so afterward, when he apprenticed under the cleric of Bahumut. That is not to say that he had no friends as he was as much part of the clan as any other, but he had no close ties with any specifically.
2) How many of these people are still alive? How many are you still friends with?
A number of those he once called friends have died through the vagaries of Orc life, but several still live and hold position among the clan, though few passed comment when Morius left the clan.
3) Who is/was your best friend? What is the most memorable thing that the two of you ever did together?
The most memorable thing Morius and his then half-brother did before his brother was killed during his rite of passage was to sneak away one afternoon, armed with training weapons and explore some of the caves – unknowingly the one his wife later stumble from on her exodus from the Underdark – near their settlement where they were nearly caught in spiders web but managed to fight it off and escape, however his half brother has been poisoned by the spider and he strongly believes it’s poison may have been responsible for him dying during his rite of passage. Morius has been careful around spiders since.
4) What do you look for in a friend?
Morius has simple requirements for a friend based upon his upbringing in the clan although being thrown into city culture has changed some of those. Primarily, those who prove themselves fighting alongside him in battle through strength of arms and spells which augment, heal or otherwise offer support are off to a good start, though he is somewhat distrustful of mages. Outside of battle, those who treat him as an equal, give him respect and do not abuse his trust are considered to be is friends.
5) Do you have (or have you had) a boy-/girlfriend, a lover, or a spouse? More than one? Are you looking for one?
Morius is happily married to his wife Killian, though Orcs typically take more than one wife, he currently has no intention of taking another wife or girlfriend without her consent.
E: Attitudes and Beliefs
1) What are your beliefs about religion and the afterlife? Do you follow any particular god or gods? What appeals to you most about this religion? Least?
Morius draws his strength from principles rather than from religion, but over his life was introduced to both the basic tenets of the religions of Gruumsh and Bahumut. Gruumsh he has mostly turned his back upon, though still observes some rituals. He was apprenticed to a cleric of Bahumut for years and learnt much about the faith, his wife became a cleric herself and he often joins in her worship, but has never felt the connection she has.
2) Where do spirits of nature, the elements and the dead fit into these beliefs?
His powers give him a connection to the elements born of his training under the clan’s shamans, which taught how to bend the energy of the elements to ones will, allowing him to manipulate fire, ice, electricity and sound, but other than understanding the principles of their manipulation, Morius does not pretend to understand how they work.
His view of the dead is that they should stay dead, particularly given that many are immune to many of his psychic abilities; Morius perceives them as monsters and will return them to their rest when able.
3) What gods, religions, or priesthoods will you have nothing to do with?
Given his upbringing he will always be opposed to the priesthoods of Tiamat and view clerics and outspoken worshippers of Corellon Larethian and Moradin with some suspicion given their history with Gruumsh.
4) What is your moral code? Under what conditions will you kill? Steal? Lie? Do you have a personal code of behaviour about violence? Magic? Sex? Dealing with Evil Beings?
Morius has no qualms about killing when the situation calls for it, but if he feels there is something to gain from it he will occasionally prefer to incapacitate a target instead. He is unlikely to steal, or at least steal subtly, preferring instead the spoils of a successful quest or raid. He does not like being lied to and will never lie to some people, such as his wife or those he trusts, but he can see the benefit in lying in some circumstances.
His own abilities are not particularly distinguishable from magic and thus he has few qualms about magic directly, only in how it is used.
5) How committed are you to seeing through something (a task, quest, bargain, etc) that you have started?
Once Morius has given his word, he will rarely renege on it unless he has been lied to or mislead first. If he has not given his word, then he may well change his mind freely.
6) How important are the following to you? Power, Wealth, Fame, Honour, Family, Friends, Love, Knowledge, Religion, Your job? To what lengths would you go to acquire or preserve these things?
Morius priority is his family, specifically his wife who he would do anything for and to a lesser extent his friends. He fights for gain, but only to make sure they can live comfortably and that should he one day return to his clan, he will be able to prove himself to them. Honour itself as a concept is not important to him, but he takes pride in succeeding in his commitments and in many ways his actions can be viewed as honourable.
7) How often do you remember your dreams? How much attention do you pay to them? Do they inspire you? Guide you? Warn you? Frighten You?
Morius does not pay particular attention to his dreams, unless it is a very rare occasion in which he remembers them vividly, but those are few and far between and typically have no meaning, though may affect his behaviour as he tries to rationalise it.
8) What is your attitude towards magic? People who use it? Fearsome monsters? The unknown in general?
As already mentioned he see’s magic and psychic abilities as useful tools, though he has issue with certain types of magic such as raising the dead to fight or controlling others with magic and the people who use it as such. Fearsome monsters are a challenge, something new to face and best, but he is not fearless and will prepare for challenges as best he can. He is particularly reluctant to face Kython again as he was particularly powerless against them in his previous encounter.
F: Edges and Flaws
1) What are you especially good at? What sets you apart from the rest of the world? A skill? An unusual knack? A certain flair of style or wit?
Morius is a rare example of his species and may surprise some with his wisdom, adaptability, calm and willingness to mingle with other species, but otherwise he is relatively unskilled at most things except in fighting, which he does with the direct and brutal efficiency of his race mingled with tactics he has learnt from others. He also has gained a pet turkey while in Avalon.
2) What flaws do you have? Bad habits? Obsessions? Terrible (or embarrassing) secrets?
Morius is impatient, not so much to throw caution to the wind, but he hates wasting time. He also dislikes backing down from a fight, once his greataxe is drawn in anger it should not be sheathed again until blood has been spilt. His wife has managed to correct many of his flaws that would offend the sensibilities of some creatures, but a few may remain.
3) Do you have any enemies? How much trouble do those conflicts cause you?
Morius has no enemies personally beyond the simple rivalries he formed with his clan mates. Only one potential source of enmity exists from the family and clan of the Hobgoblin he slew for his Rite of Passage, who considered his use of psionics cheating and caused tensions between the two clans to rise, but it is unlikely those Hobgoblins would even know he had gone to Avalon. So far Morius is aware of no enemies in Avalon itself, but how many enemies he creates any during his time here remains to be seen.
G: Likes and Dislikes
1) What do you love? (People? Places? Creatures? Kinds of Food? Activities? Subjects?)
Foremost Morius loves Killian and loves doing things with her, he also cares for his pet turkey Speck, but equally he misses his home and what he describes as ‘good honest food home cooking’ and orcish beverages, though the grey orc areas in the Undercity provide some solace. He is still getting used to life in the city, though he hated it at first, though he still enjoys getting out of the city when he can, particularly on quests or missions where he can exercise his fighting spirit.
2) What do you hate? How do you typically react to these hated things?
There are two things Morius has grown to hate, Necromancers and Kython. If the former are the rare peaceful kind, then he has no issue with them, but if they begin experimenting on the living or raising the dead for their own ends then he will oppose them when he can. Kython are a more difficult issue, he was near powerless against them before, but intends to become stronger so that he can remove that dark stain from his pride.
He has yet to explore much of the city, but hates some parts of it, particularly the sewers which cause so many problems for the city dwellers and never existed in his home town. He also hates the crowds, though he has become more adept at navigating them.
3) What do you fear? What is your worst nightmare?
Losing Killian is his greatest fear followed by losing his home and the few possessions he has from his home, losing them would force him to return home in shame or never return home at all.
H: Miscellaneous
1) Describe your first encounter with a nonhuman monster.
During his childhood, Morius clan sometimes traded with goblins, hobgoblins and bugbears and a rare traveller from the Underdark. Each was handled differently; the goblins were sneaky and often found creeping around where they shouldn’t, a favourite target of children looking for fun. The arrival of Hobgoblins was always tense and often ended in challenges between fighters of his clan and theirs, if not greater bloodshed. Bugbears passed through in small bands, sometimes looking for work, sometimes looking for trade.
2) If you are a manifester, describe your first experience with using psionics. What were the circumstances? Were you expecting it?
Morius first experience with his psionic powers was during his Rite of Passage, at a time when a clan of hobgoblins had been passing through his clans land. Morius had been selected by the shamans to prove himself in a fight to the death against a Hobgoblin of a similar age.
The fight had been close: Morius had opened with a charge at the hobgoblin, catching him with a glancing blow, though he could not press the advantage, leaving them trading blows until the hobgoblin took the upper hand by knocking Morius greataxe from his hands with a blow that sent him reeling to the floor. The hobgoblin closed but was stopped by a ray of psionic fire, the anger and shame Morius felt given form by the power of his will as the Shaman’s had tried to teach him.
The instinctive action caught both Morius and the Hoblgoblin by surprise, but Morius rallied first, grabbing his greataxe and slamming it into the burning hobgoblin’s throat, winning the bout in his name.
3) If you have an animal companion or familiar, describe how you acquired it. Describe this ally's personality, and its attitude towards you. (Loyal unto death, mischievous, lazy, etc)
See Speck tab.
4) If you have any unusual possessions, describe how you acquired them. Is their value practical, monetary, sentimental or some combination of these?
The Bone Mail he was given by his parents when he left his hometown is no longer used, but has been kept, stored in his house for the day he returns home. Similarly his first Greataxe, the one he had used during his rites of passage is no longer used, but is also kept as a reminder of times gone.
5) Please describe your characters general background, this may be any length you wish, but at least one paragraph.
See Background tab.
